Katana Maintenance Guide
Proper maintenance is essential to preserve the beauty and functionality of your katana. Follow this guide to keep your blade in pristine condition.
What You'll Need
- Choji oil (camellia oil with clove) or light mineral oil
- Soft, lint-free cloth (rice paper or microfiber)
- Uchiko ball (polishing powder)
Step 1: Cleaning the Blade
Always handle your blade with clean, dry hands. Never touch the blade surface with bare fingers as skin oils can cause corrosion.
- Hold the sword horizontally with the edge facing up
- Using a soft cloth, gently wipe the blade from base to tip
- Remove any old oil or residue completely
Step 2: Applying Oil
Oil protects the blade from moisture and oxidation. Apply a few drops of choji oil to a clean cloth. Wipe the blade evenly. Apply a thin, even layer. Wipe off excess.
How Often to Maintain
- After handling: Always clean and lightly oil
- Monthly: Full inspection and cleaning
- Before storage: Ensure blade is clean and oiled
